Digital addiction is a harmful dependence on digital media and devices such as smartphones, video games, and computers. Digital addiction can be defined where an individual is excessively or poorly controlled, urges, preoccupations or behaviours with regard to usage of mobile phones, computer, internet access can lead to dysfunction or distress,
The overuse of digital devices causes several problems and these problems are named as addiction that leads to physiological and psychological problems among children as well the youths. (Muduli, 2014) Researchers have found that digital addiction can be one of the sources for depression, disrupted sleep and social isolation of young adults. Also, when individuals are not able to utilise their devices or come offline, they experience negative mood swings, increased levels of depression, loneliness and impulsivity. Utilising excessive time on devices results in isolation and which can led towards conflicting interpersonal relationships.
From children to adults everyone can be affected with digital addiction. Digital addiction in children can result in lacking the ability to manage and restrict computer use, difficulty in falling asleep, altered attention span, increased risk of obese due to lack of physical activity, and increased irritability. Similarly, adults who exhibit digit addictive behaviours are more likely to become depressed within months of immense use. Due to which it can negatively affect their productivity, motivation, mood etc.
Digital detox is defined as complete abstinence or intentional reduction of one’s time to disconnect from the online/digital world. It involves various benefits of increased/sharpened focus, lower stress level & improving interpersonal relationships, being mindful of one’s time without having any distractions around.
