Parent Management Training (PMT)
Parent management training (PMT) is an approach where the trained mental health professional teaches parents to utilise their responses or interaction with their children to increase the frequency of desired behaviors and diminish the maladaptive behaviors in a home setting.
In the PMT session, MHP provides training on utilising specific procedures to alter interactions with their child , in order to promote prosocial behaviour and decrease deviant behaviour. Application of PMT has been seen primarily employed in the treatment of the children who exhibit behaviour problems such as temper tantrums, aggression(verbal & physical), excessive noncompliance, lying, stealing and disobeying authorities etc.
Parents receive training on how to define, monitor, and track a child's behaviour as well as on positive reinforcement techniques like praise and other forms of positive parent attention as well as token or point systems. They also learn about extinction and mild punishment techniques like ignoring a child or taking a timeout in place of physical punishment, as well as how to give commands and instructions that are clear and how to solve problems. To encourage good parenting, therapists in the PMT approach frequently employ didactic instruction, modelling, role playing, behavioural rehearsal, and scheduled homework tasks.
